Game History

Hurricane is a pinball machine released by Williams Electronics in August 1991. It was designed by Barry Oursler as the third game in his amusement park themed pinball trilogy, following Comet (1985) and Cyclone (1988). The machine featured a vibrant carnival/amusement park theme with a dot matrix display (DMD) and was manufactured with approximately 4,400 units produced.

The game incorporated several new features for its time, including a rotating backglass animation similar to Cyclone's award wheel, with a Hurricane rollercoaster spinning around to choose awards displayed on the DMD. The playfield featured distinctive mechanical elements such as Ferris wheel ball locks, shooting gallery targets in the form of cats and ducks that returned from Comet, and a unique spinning Hurricane ramp.

Use the side buttons to control the flippers. Try to catch the ball, aim shots, build modes and keep the ball alive. Nudging can help, but too much force may tilt the machine.

  • Ramps: usually safe scoring routes.
  • Orbits: loops around the playfield.
  • Targets: hit these to advance modes and objectives.
  • Multiball: a major scoring opportunity.
