Game History

OutRun 2 is a 2003 racing game developed by Sega AM2 for arcades, serving as the first entry in the OutRun series in a decade following OutRunners (1992). The game debuted in arcades in December 2003 and was available as both single and twin cabinets, which could be linked to allow up to four players to compete simultaneously. The game ran on Sega's Chihiro hardware, which was based on Xbox architecture.

Sega licensed seven Ferrari vehicles for OutRun 2, including the iconic Testarossa from the original 1986 OutRun game, and stayed true to the race format of the original, where players drive a Ferrari sports car with a friend in the passenger seat through 5 of 15 stages. The game was overhauled with modern 3D graphics and a local networked multiplayer system while maintaining the series' signature nonlinear gameplay and selectable soundtrack.

How to Play

Objective

The main goal of OutRun 2 is to complete a multi-stage road race by reaching checkpoints within the time limit. You must navigate through branching routes that offer different challenges and scenery, ultimately aiming to reach one of multiple possible endings. The game simulates the experience of a leisurely high-speed drive in a Ferrari sports car with a passenger, emphasizing the journey rather than just competition.

Controls

  • Steering Wheel: Turn the wheel left or right to steer your vehicle
  • Gas Pedal: Press to accelerate and increase speed
  • Brake Pedal: Press to slow down, brake, or reverse
  • Shifter: Use to shift between gears (typically a 4-speed manual transmission)
  • Music Button: Press to change the background music during gameplay

  • Drifting System: Master the drift mechanics to navigate corners at high speeds without losing control, a key feature of the OutRun series.
