Game History

Scud Race, known as Sega Super GT in North America, is an arcade racing game developed by Sega AM2 and released to Japanese arcades in December 1996, with an international release following in 1997. It was the first racing game to utilize Sega's Model 3 Step 1.5 hardware, which was over three times more powerful than its predecessor and capable of rendering up to 750,000 polygons per second, allowing for unprecedented graphical realism.

The game served as the spiritual successor to Daytona USA, exchanging NASCAR stock cars for licensed GT supercars like the Ferrari F40, Dodge Viper, Porsche 911, and McLaren F1, set against fictional tracks in "Versus City." Directed by Toshihiro Nagoshi, who had previously led Daytona USA, the development team incorporated about 80% of that game's staff while evolving the formula with more realistic physics and drift handling. AM2 head Yu Suzuki provided consultation on the game's drift mechanics and sound sampling.

The name "Scud Race" was changed to "Sega Super GT" for North America due to potential associations with SCUD missiles from the Gulf War, a change made after successful testing at Sega City in Irvine, California, where it reportedly became the fastest-grossing arcade machine of all time. The game was a commercial success, particularly in Japan where it was ranked as the second most-successful dedicated arcade game in March 1997.

How to Play

Objective

The main goal of Scud Race is to complete each race in the highest position possible by outpacing your opponents on various tracks. You must navigate through challenging courses while maintaining control at high speeds to finish first. The game simulates the experience of professional GT racing with licensed supercars, each with different performance characteristics.

Controls

  • Steering Wheel: Turn the wheel left or right to steer your vehicle
  • Gas Pedal: Press to accelerate and increase speed
  • Brake Pedal: Press to slow down, brake, or reverse
  • Shifter: Use to shift between gears (typically a 4-speed manual transmission)
  • View Button: Press to change camera perspectives during the race

Gameplay

  • Starting the Game: Press the Start Button to begin your racing championship.

  • Vehicle Selection: Choose your GT car from the available options, including the Ferrari F40, Dodge Viper, Porsche 911, and McLaren F1.

  • Course Selection: Select from available tracks, each featuring different layouts and challenges set in "Versus City."

  • Racing Mechanics: Navigate through the course while competing against computer-controlled opponent vehicles.

  • Drifting System: Master the drift mechanics to navigate corners at high speeds without losing control. The game features realistic physics that simulate GT car handling.

  • Position Tracking: Monitor your position during the race and work to overtake opponents while defending your position.

  • Lap System: Complete multiple laps of each course to finish the race. The number of laps varies by track selection.

  • Two-Player Competition: In multiplayer mode, compete against another player on the same course.

  • Race Completion: Finish the race to receive your placement based on your performance. Winning races yields higher scores and allows progression to more challenging courses.
