Game History

Sega Rally Championship is a landmark racing game developed by Sega AM3 and released to arcades in 1995, running on the powerful Sega Model 2 hardware. Originally conceived for the Model 1 board, development was shifted to the more advanced Model 2 system, allowing the game to render an impressive 300,000 polygons per second.

The game's most revolutionary feature was its pioneering surface physics system, which realistically simulated how cars handled differently on various terrains like asphalt, gravel, and mud, with each surface having distinct friction properties that affected the vehicle's behavior. This innovation was considered a milestone in the evolution of the racing genre, balancing arcade accessibility with a degree of realism that would later influence developers of more serious rally simulations like the Colin McRae Rally series.

Sega Rally Championship was an immediate commercial success, selling 12,000 arcade units and becoming the second most successful dedicated arcade game in Japan during March 1995. The game featured three tracks—Sand, Forest, and Hills—with varying difficulty levels, and allowed two players to compete simultaneously. Its popularity at the 1995 Amusement Operators' Union Show in Tokyo was notable, with lines constantly forming to play Sega's newest attraction.
