Game History

Last Bronx is a 3D fighting game developed by Sega AM3 and released to arcades in May 1996, running on the powerful Sega Model 2B hardware. The game was set in a near-future, crime-ridden Tokyo, where rival street gangs engage in a weapon-based fighting tournament to gain control of the city's underworld.

The game was notable for its realistic approach to weapon-based combat, with each character wielding authentic martial arts weapons and wearing clothing based on contemporary Tokyo street fashions. It was one of the first 3D fighting games to fully utilize motion capture technology, resulting in smooth, fluid animations that ran at 60 frames per second. The Japanese version carried the subtitle "Tokyo Bangaichi," which roughly translates to "Tokyo Wasteland," though this was removed for international releases.

While Last Bronx achieved significant success in Japan, where it was novelized and adapted into comics and radio dramas, it failed to find an audience in Western markets. Despite its limited commercial success outside Japan, the game was ported to Sega Saturn in 1997, Windows in 1998, and later to PlayStation 2 in 2006 as part of the Sega Ages 2500 Series. The game remains a cult classic among fighting game enthusiasts for its unique setting and technical achievements.
