Rampage World Tour
Game History
Rampage World Tour is a 1997 arcade game developed by Game Refuge and published by Midway Games, serving as the sequel to the 1986 classic Rampage. The game was designed by Brian Colin and Jeff Nauman, who also created the original Rampage.
Running on Midway's Wolf Unit hardware and unlike many games of its era that were transitioning to 3D polygon graphics, Rampage World Tour maintained the 2D sprite-based presentation of its predecessor. The game supported up to three players simultaneously, allowing them to control the original monster trio—George (gorilla), Lizzie (lizard), and Ralph (werewolf)—as they traveled the world destroying cities.
The concept for the game was born during a meeting between Game Refuge designers and Midway executives, where the idea of creating a game with universal appeal led to the decision to remake Rampage. While the arcade version was successful, the game received mixed critical reception, with some praising its nostalgic simplicity while others criticized its outdated graphics and repetitive gameplay.
Following its arcade release, Rampage World Tour was ported to numerous home consoles, including PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, and Microsoft Windows. The game became part of the broader Rampage franchise, which would see several sequels and eventually inspire a 2018 film adaptation.
