Sonic All Star Racing
Game History
The Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing arcade machine is a version of Sega's kart racing game developed by Sumo Digital and adapted for arcade play. The arcade version was tested in some arcades in January 2011 and was later released for sale in March 2011, following the home console release in February 2010. The arcade version ran on Sega's RingWide hardware and featured less content than the home versions, with only 13 characters and tracks compared to the 20 characters available in console releases.
The arcade cabinet included a 32-inch HD LCD screen and standard wheel/pedal controls designed to provide superior control over the home versions. A distinctive feature of the arcade version was its ticket redemption capability, allowing players to earn tickets based on their performance. The game could link up to eight units locally for multiplayer racing, making it a popular attraction in arcade centers.
This arcade release marked the first time Sonic appeared as the star of his own arcade game since Sonic The Fighters was released in 1996. The game featured Sega's answer to titles like Mario Kart, with power-ups, drifting mechanics, and tracks that reflected environments from various Sega games over the years.
