Game History

Ghosts 'n Goblins is a platform game developed by Capcom and released to arcades in September 1985. Created by Tokuro Fujiwara, who had previously designed the acclaimed Commando, the game established itself as one of the most notoriously difficult and influential titles of the 8-bit era.

The game's premise follows knight Arthur as he battles through demonic hordes to rescue Princess Prin-Prin from the clutches of Satan. Arthur's iconic design, featuring a suit of armor that falls off with the first hit, leaving him in his boxer shorts, became an enduring image in gaming culture. The game ran on Capcom's CP System hardware, which allowed for detailed sprites and challenging gameplay that pushed the boundaries of platformers at the time.

Ghosts 'n Goblins was renowned for its extreme difficulty, with players having to navigate through treacherous levels filled with relentless enemies while avoiding instant-death hazards. The game also featured a unique "double fake" ending, where completing the game once revealed that it was merely an illusion, forcing players to complete it a second time with increased difficulty to see the true ending.

The game was a commercial success, with Capcom shipping 12,000 arcade units worldwide.
