Game History

1942 is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game developed by Capcom and released in December 1984.  The game was Capcom's first breakthrough hit in the North American market and established the company as a major player in the arcade industry.

The game's premise was inspired by the Pacific Theater of World War II, with players controlling a Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane tasked with battling through waves of enemy aircraft and naval forces. What set 1942 apart from other shooters of its era was its innovative gameplay mechanics, including the ability to perform loop maneuvers to avoid enemy fire and a power-up system that allowed players to upgrade their weapons.

1942 was an immediate commercial success, with Capcom shipping over 10,000 units worldwide and the game becoming one of the highest-grossing arcade titles of 1985.
